HM The Queen
On the afternoon of Thursday 14 June 2001, we were delighted to host a visit from HM Queen Elizabeth II to view the recently completed Sunbury Millennium Embroidery.
The present Embroidery Gallery had not yet been constructed and the various panels that make up the embroidery were grouped around the Lendy Lion monument in the centre of the Walled Garden under a contemporary tented structure.
The visit was attended by 350 guests including the 147 embroiders who created the finished panels. School children waved flags in the car park and many people lined the streets outside. The weather on the day was perfect.
Her Majesty was guided through the garden by David Brown, who inspired the project, and she met with the many embroiders who described to her their own contributions to the work. She also viewed a model of the current building which opened in 2006.
