Creative tips written by Marina Castledine

Many people believe poetry needs to rhyme or have a particular rhythm.

That there are rules to writing which must be followed this is untrue!

Poetry can be, within reason, anything you would like it to be. At its heart, it is a collection of carefully chosen words, arranged on a page, to give meaning to something. It is your personal expression. Allow the words to do the work. Enjoy finding them, selecting them and deciding how to edit them. And if rhyme is your thing, then make sure it brings a new note to the way only you can sing. In fact, singing your poem and certainly reading it out, loud and proud, will help you hear words in new ways.

The Competition and how to enter:

Winning entries for each age group and art piece will form an integral part of the Diana Springall 'The Poetry of Stitch' exhibition at The Sunbury Embroidery Gallery which runs from March 3rd to April 27th 2025.

The winning poems will be displayed alongside each art piece for the duration of the exhibition.

To enter the competition, login into our website www.sunburygallery.org.

You will find individual downloadable briefs for each of the featured art pieces. This is a golden opportunity to embrace your individual creativity and curiosity and have your work on public display.
